Microsoft Edge's new built-in VPN capability is put to the test.

Microsoft is working on a built-in VPN feature for the Edge browser dubbed 'Edge Secure Network,' but there's a catch: it won't replace your VPN.

Edge's Secure Network is powered by Cloudflare, one of the industry's most trusted DNS hosts, and is designed to keep your device and sensitive data safe as you surf. The functionality is still in beta and only accessible to a small number of users in Edge Canary. It isn't a full-fledged VPN service like those provided by competing browsers like Opera.

So, how does the Secure Network in Microsoft Edge work? Edge utilises Cloudflare's routing to secure your internet connection and safeguard your data from online risks like hackers, according to the support guide and our testing.

According to Microsoft, the Edge Secure network feature puts your traffic via an encrypted tunnel to establish a secure connection, which means even HTTP URLs are viewed securely in order to make it more difficult for attackers to gain your browsing data and to prevent online monitoring.

Your location seems to be secret since your traffic is routed via Cloudflare, and your real IP address is concealed behind Cloudflare's network. To make it more difficult for web trackers to track you on the internet, it substitutes your geolocation with a comparable geographical address (the nearest Cloudflare server).

Edge Secure Network is not a substitute for a VPN.

While Edge Secure Networks may seem to be an enticing option, it is not the same as a traditional VPN.

It's probable that the functionality makes advantage of Cloudflare's Warp, a free service that assures that all of your traffic between your device and the origin server is kept secret.

Edge's VPN does not allow you to pick your location, according to our testing. It merely encrypts your data and optimises your DNS for a quicker connection by using 1.1.1.1.

The good news is that we can still utilise Edge's Secure Network (powered by Cloudflare) to get around the ISP or government's local limitations.
